Diving in Roatan and the Bay Islands
Whether you are an experienced scuba diver wanting a fun dive, an enthusiast who wants to take the step to becoming a PADI Professional diver or if you wish to explore the underwater world for the very first time by taking a PADI Open Water Course or Discover Scuba Diving course, Reef Gliders can help make your Roatan diving experience a memorable one.
The Bay Islands (Las Islas de la Bahia) are famous for their world-class fringing walls. There are also plenty of shallow sites perfect for snorkelling or for beginners. There are several excellent wreck dives such as the El Aguila, the Odyssey and the Prince Albert.
The Bay Islands reef system is composed of a number of features. On the outer side there is the reef wall, which typically starts at around 50ft (15m). Behind the reef is the lagoon. This area rarely exceeds 15ft (5m) in depth and is ideal for swimming due to its crystal clear calm waters.
The Bay Islands is home to over 95% of the Caribbean's coral and fish species, so is one of the most diverse areas of the Caribbean. The reef surrounding Roatan forms part of the Belize reef system - the second largest barrier reef system in the world and home to a rich diversity of both corals and fish life.
There are around 90 moored dive sites around the island. In fact these moored sites only make up about a third of the total number of dive sites. On the west of the island there is now a marine reserve encompassing approximately 40 sites.
There are two hyperbaric chambers on the island located at Anthony's Key and Fantasy Island resorts. Just to be on the safe side we recommend that you make sure your travel/dive insurance covers recompression treatment.
We offer 3 fun dives a day - 9am, 11:30am and 2:30pm. Bookings are not essential for fun dives, however it is advised to ensure space is available - particularly in the high season. We also offer night dives (including the PADI Night Diver speciality course) upon request. For further information on diving and making a booking you can e-mail, telephone or call into the store.
Reef Gliders is a supporter of the Sandy Bay & West End Marine Reserve, a volunteer organisation that has been set up to protect the West End/Sandy Bay reef system where we dive. The Marine Reserve relies solely on donations and we therefore ask all our divers to donate the $10 marine park fee to this worthy cause. In return you will receive a reef tag that allows you access to the Marine Reserve for a year. ALL donations received are given to the Marine Reserve which helps to pay for a marine patrol and dive site moorings to protect our reef environment.
